A history of Cleveland's West Side: Sports, dining and rock'n'roll

While the past has been extraordinary, the present and future of the West Side of Cleveland is even more dynamic. Middleburg Heights and surrounding areas play host to thousands of visitors, tourists and native Clevelanders. It's home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, to FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns, a storied NFL franchise and it's where you'll find Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, home to the NBA champion Cavaliers.

The West Side is only about an hour from Akron, OH, world headquarters for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and boyhood home to Lebron James, who led the Cavaliers to that NBA championship. Perhaps most significant of all (at least for us) is that Middleburg Heights, a suburb on Cleveland's West Side, is the world headquarters of Ganley Lincoln of Middleburg Heights, OH, home of stunning new and used Lincoln models.

The West Side Market: Cleveland's oldest public market

It started back in 1840, an amazing 180 years ago. Two men named Josiah Barber and Richard Lord presented the city with land at the corner of Pearl Street (now West 25th) and Lorain Street. One condition was that the market must always be public, accessible to everyone. By 1902, the markethouse just wasn't big enough for the surrounding population so a new market was built just across the street.

Decades later in 1953, the West Side Market merchants gave the property a million-dollar makeover. The merchants upgraded again in a bigger way with $5 million worth of improvements in the late 1970s. It officially became a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Nearly $100,000 worth of additional improvements happened in 1992, and it's still a vibrant part of the West Side today.

Cue the music

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened its doors in 1983, founded by famous names in the music business including Jann Wenner, the publisher of Rolling Stone magazine. It's an internationally-known institution that celebrates the pioneers and the stars of Rock & Roll. Among the many musical luminaries who have been inducted inro the Hall of Fame are Chuck Berry, Aretha Franklin, Mick Jagger and in 1988, the Beatles.

Capsule history of West Side sports stadiums

FirstEnergy Stadium is the gameday home of the Cleveland Browns, one of the oldest franchises in the National Football League. The stadium was opened in September of 1999 as the Browns tackled their long-time division rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse was originally called Gund Arenaback in 1994 and was home to the Cavaliers. The founder of Quicken Loans, Dan Gilbert, bought Gund Arena in 2005 and changed the name to Quicken Loans Arena, after the parent of Rocket Mortgage.  In 2016, the Cavs won the NBA championship. The final game wasn't in Cleveland but the celebration was. Then in 2019, Quicken Loans Arena became Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
